BEWARE OF CARBON MONOXIDE GAS!

30.01.2025 30.01.2025 181

   Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas, as well as a toxic substance, which is formed due to the incomplete combustion of combustible materials and substances (gas, wood, coal, etc.). Upon detecting the smell of gas, immediately notify the emergency dispatch service, close all gas valves, refrain from using open flames, immediately open doors and windows for ventilation, and avoid turning electrical appliances on or off.
   Carbon monoxide poisoning depends on the duration of its effect in the air and can be mild, moderate, or severe. In such cases, there are severe headaches, vomiting, loss of consciousness, and slowed breathing, which may sometimes lead to death.
   In cases of severe poisoning, immediate emergency medical assistance must be called. Before the arrival of the doctor, the following actions should be taken:
First aid for carbon monoxide poisoning is extremely important in saving the victim’s life. First, the victim must be quickly moved to fresh air. If the victim is unconscious, ammonia spirit should be smelled, artificial respiration should be given, the body should be rubbed, hot tea or coffee should be given, and, of course, an ambulance should be called.
   According to studies, most cases of carbon monoxide poisoning arise due to the following reasons:

  • Failure to observe safety rules when using gas and alternative fuels (coal, wood, etc.);
  • Use of homemade stoves and appliances;
  • Incorrect installation of chimneys in heating stoves;
  • Bringing heating stoves adapted for gas or other alternative fuels and liquefied hydrocarbon gas cylinders into restrooms;
  • Using open flames (coal, wood) for heating rooms without ventilation;
  • Closing ventilation holes that provide air exchange.
    Due to the above-mentioned reasons, incomplete combustion of fuel (gas, coal, wood, and others) results in carbon monoxide. Avoid allowing such causes. Be cautious with carbon monoxide.
    Every citizen must be aware of the danger of carbon monoxide, give it serious attention, use heating devices properly, and, most importantly, prevent the causes listed above.
