Full-scale environmental and social impact assessment of the casting and rolling complex project at Uzmetkombinat

11.02.2025 14.02.2025 286

Uzmetkombinat JSC (UMK) is designing a new casting and rolling complex (CRC) to be located at the plant’s existing site. The new facility will be used for making hot-rolled sheets in coils from low-carbon low-alloyed regular and high-quality steels.

The CRC’s infrastructure will be integrated with the relevant facilities of Uzmetkombinat. The project also envisages construction of two off-site facilities: a 23 km 220 kV power transmission line and a 1.2 km access road.

As required by lenders of the project, UMK conducted an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) in accordance with the standards of the International Finance Corporation.

The purpose of the ESIA is to identify environmental and social impacts and associated effects, and then to develop and implement appropriate measures so as to prevent and/or mitigate the identified environmental and social risks of the project.

The ESIA was conducted by Shaneco Group JSC (Russia) and EkostandardEkspert LLC (Uzbekistan).

Following the assessment, the following documents for the CRC project are now available for review by stakeholders:

  • Stakeholder Engagement Plan;
  • Non-Technical Summary;
  • Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.

Stakeholders can file their questions, comments or suggestions regarding these documents with UMK during the period from 11 June to 11 August 2023 as follows:

  • by e-mail: v.kenjabaev@uzbeksteel.uz
  • by post: 1 Sirdaryo St., Bekabad, Tashkent Region, 110502, Republic of Uzbekistan;
  • by phone: +998 90 336 33 13,

Feedback from all stakeholder groups will be handled by Vosit Kenjabaev, the lead engineer of the future casting and rolling complex. Responses will be given directly to the requesters and will also be summarised in the ESIA materials.
